Chardonnay Wine
Chardonnay is one of the world's most versatile white wine grapes, producing everything from lean, mineral and citrus-driven wines to rich, textured styles with ripe fruit, oak and creamy complexity. Its character is shaped enormously by where it is grown and how it is made, which is why Chardonnay from Chablis can taste remarkably different from a bottle made in California or Australia.
Our selection brings together distinctive Chardonnay from small producers around the world, including Burgundy, France, California, Australia and beyond. Whether you prefer crisp and unoaked or richer, barrel-aged Chardonnay, there is an extraordinary range of styles to discover.

Chardonnay is one of the most versatile white wine grapes, and its style can vary enormously depending on climate and winemaking. In cooler regions it can produce crisp, mineral wines with citrus and green apple flavours, while warmer climates can bring riper peach and tropical fruit. Oak ageing, lees contact and malolactic fermentation can add texture, toast, spice and creamy or buttery notes. Understanding these differences makes choosing Chardonnay much easier.
What style of Chardonnay do you enjoy?
If you prefer crisp, fresh Chardonnay, look for wines from cooler regions or bottles made with little or no obvious oak. These often show citrus, green apple and mineral flavours. For something richer, look towards riper climates or wines fermented and aged in barrel, where Chardonnay can develop flavours of peach, tropical fruit, toast and spice alongside a rounder texture. Burgundy itself spans this spectrum, from the steely character of Chablis to the richer styles of the Côte de Beaune.
Choosing Chardonnay for food
Chardonnay is exceptionally versatile with food because its style can range from lean and mineral to rich and creamy. Crisp, unoaked Chardonnay is excellent with oysters, shellfish and lighter fish dishes, while fuller, barrel-aged examples work beautifully with roast chicken, lobster, creamy sauces and richer seafood. Mature or more complex Chardonnay can also be excellent with mushrooms and soft or hard cheeses.
Look beyond Burgundy
Burgundy is Chardonnay's historic home and remains a benchmark for the grape, but outstanding Chardonnay is now made around the world. California can produce everything from fresh, restrained wines to richer, barrel-aged styles, while Australia offers an increasingly exciting range of precise, elegant Chardonnay. New Zealand, South Africa and other regions add still more interpretations. Exploring different origins is one of the best ways to discover just how varied Chardonnay can be.
Chardonnay Wine FAQs
What does Chardonnay taste like?
Chardonnay can taste remarkably different depending on where it is grown and how it is made. Cooler-climate examples often show citrus, green apple and mineral flavours, while warmer regions can produce riper peach and tropical fruit. Oak ageing and other winemaking choices can add flavours of toast, vanilla and spice as well as a richer, creamier texture.
Is Chardonnay always oaked?
No. Chardonnay can be made entirely without oak, producing fresh, fruit-driven wines with crisp acidity, or it can be fermented and aged in barrels for greater texture and complexity. Some producers use a combination of oak and stainless steel. Chablis is particularly associated with a leaner, more mineral expression of Chardonnay, although some Chablis is also made or aged with oak.
What food goes best with Chardonnay?
Chardonnay pairs with a wide range of foods because its styles vary so much. Crisp, unoaked Chardonnay is excellent with oysters, shellfish, grilled fish and lighter dishes, while richer, oak-aged styles work particularly well with roast chicken, lobster, creamy sauces and richer seafood. Chardonnay can also be a very good match for mushrooms and cheese.
What is the difference between Chablis and Chardonnay?
Chardonnay is a grape variety, while Chablis is a wine region in northern Burgundy where the wines are made from Chardonnay. Chablis is typically associated with a fresh, dry and mineral style, often showing citrus and green apple flavours. Chardonnay grown elsewhere can produce many different styles, from similarly crisp wines to much richer, fuller and more heavily oaked examples.
