Vegan Wine
Vegan wine is made without the use of animal-derived products during winemaking. Although grapes themselves are naturally vegan, traditional fining agents can include substances such as egg white, milk protein or fish-derived products. Vegan winemakers instead avoid these or use alternatives such as plant-based or mineral fining agents, while some wines are left unfined altogether. Our selection brings together distinctive vegan wines from small producers, chosen for character, quality and individuality.

Wine is made from grapes, so it may seem surprising that not every bottle is vegan. The difference usually comes down to fining, a process sometimes used to clarify or stabilise wine before bottling. Traditional fining agents can be animal-derived, while vegan wines use suitable alternatives or may be bottled without fining. Being vegan does not determine how a wine tastes, so the best place to start is still with the grapes, regions and styles you enjoy.
How do you choose a vegan wine?
Choose vegan wine in exactly the same way you would choose any other wine: by grape variety, region and the style you enjoy. Vegan describes how the wine has been made, not how it tastes, so you can find everything from crisp whites and elegant reds to sparkling, orange and sweet wines.
Why isn’t all wine vegan?
Some winemakers use fining agents to remove tiny particles from wine before bottling. Traditionally these can include animal-derived products such as egg white, milk protein or fish-derived isinglass. Vegan wines either avoid these products, use non-animal alternatives or may be left unfined.
Does vegan wine taste different?
Not necessarily. Whether a wine is vegan tells you very little about its flavour. Grape variety, vineyard, climate and winemaking have a much greater influence on how the wine tastes. For us, vegan wine still has to earn its place on the shelf for its character, quality and individuality.
Vegan Wine FAQs
What makes a wine vegan?
A vegan wine is made without animal-derived products during winemaking. This is particularly relevant during fining, when some producers traditionally use substances such as egg white, milk protein or fish-derived isinglass. Vegan wines use non-animal alternatives or may be bottled without fining.
Is vegan wine the same as organic wine?
No. Vegan wine refers to the products used during winemaking, while organic wine relates primarily to how the grapes are grown and the rules followed in the vineyard and winery. A wine can be vegan without being organic, organic without being vegan, or both.
How can you tell if a wine is vegan?
Some wines are clearly labelled as vegan, but many are not. The bottle or producer’s technical information may confirm whether animal-derived fining agents have been used. At Spy, wines in our Vegan Wine collection have been identified as vegan based on information available from the producer or supplier.
Does vegan wine taste different?
No particular flavour defines vegan wine. Whether animal-derived products are used during fining generally tells you very little about how the finished wine will taste. Grape variety, region, vintage and winemaking choices have a much greater influence on its flavour and character.
