What style of sparkling wine do you enjoy?
For something crisp, dry and refreshing, look for wines with bright acidity and fresh citrus or orchard-fruit flavours. Traditional-method sparkling wines tend to offer greater complexity, often developing brioche, toast and nutty notes with ageing. Pét-Nat can be fruitier, less formal and sometimes a little cloudy, while rosé sparkling wines often bring more red-fruit character. These are useful starting points rather than strict rules.
Choosing sparkling wine for food
Sparkling wine is remarkably versatile with food. Its acidity and bubbles make it excellent with seafood, fried dishes, charcuterie and salty snacks, while richer traditional-method wines can work beautifully with roast chicken, creamy dishes and cheese. Fruitier styles can also be excellent with spicy food. Sparkling wine certainly doesn’t need to be saved for celebrations.
Look beyond Champagne
Champagne deserves its reputation, but some of the most interesting sparkling wines are made elsewhere. Crémant offers traditional-method wines from regions across France, England now produces excellent sparkling wine, and small producers around the world are experimenting with local grapes and different production methods. Exploring beyond the familiar can uncover distinctive bottles at a wide range of prices.
Sparkling Wine FAQs
What is the difference between sparkling wine and Champagne?
Champagne is sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France under specific production rules. Sparkling wine is made all over the world using several different methods and grape varieties. Crémant, English sparkling wine and Pét-Nat are just some of the many styles worth exploring.
What are the main types of sparkling wine?
Sparkling wine includes Champagne, Crémant, English sparkling wine, Prosecco, Cava and Pét-Nat, alongside many regional styles from around the world. They can range from light, fruity and refreshing to rich, complex and savoury depending on the grapes, region and production method.
What food goes best with sparkling wine?
Sparkling wine is extremely versatile with food. Crisp, dry styles are excellent with seafood, fried food, charcuterie and salty snacks, while richer traditional-method wines work well with roast chicken, creamy dishes and cheese. Fruitier sparkling wines can also be particularly good with spicy food.
How cold should sparkling wine be served?
Most sparkling wine is best served well chilled, but not ice cold. Around 6–10°C works well for lighter styles, while more complex or mature sparkling wines can be served slightly warmer so their aromas and flavours have a chance to develop.
