Organic Wine
Organic wine begins in the vineyard, with grapes grown according to organic farming standards that restrict the use of synthetic herbicides, pesticides and fertilisers. Organic certification also sets requirements for winemaking in the cellar, although exact regulations vary. Our selection brings together distinctive organic wines from small producers around the world, chosen first and foremost because they are delicious, characterful wines — not simply because they carry an organic label.

Organic wine is not a particular style of wine, so the organic label alone cannot tell you what a bottle will taste like. You can find organic wines that are red, white, rosé, sparkling or orange, made in styles ranging from traditional to experimental. Instead, organic refers principally to how the grapes are grown and, for certified wines, certain practices in the cellar. The best way to choose is still to start with the grape varieties, regions and styles of wine you already enjoy.
How do you choose an organic wine?
Start with the same things you would consider when choosing any wine: grape variety, region, style and what you plan to drink it with. Organic farming does not create one particular flavour. A crisp organic Sauvignon Blanc can taste completely different from an organic Rioja or Champagne. Think of organic as part of the story behind the bottle rather than a style in itself.
What does organic certification mean?
Certified organic wine must meet defined standards governing how grapes are grown and how the wine is made. These restrict many synthetic treatments in the vineyard and place requirements on practices and additions in the cellar. Certification gives customers an independently regulated standard, although some producers may farm organically without choosing to become certified.
Organic, biodynamic or natural?
These terms overlap but they do not mean the same thing. Organic wine follows defined organic standards, while biodynamic farming goes further with its own principles and, where certified, separate standards. Natural wine is a broader, less formally defined approach to low-intervention winemaking. A bottle may fit more than one of these descriptions, but you should not assume that one automatically means another.
Organic Wine FAQs
What makes a wine organic?
Organic wine is made from grapes grown according to organic farming standards, which restrict the use of many synthetic herbicides, pesticides and fertilisers. Certified organic wine must also meet requirements governing winemaking in the cellar.
Does organic wine contain sulphites?
Yes, it can. Sulphites occur naturally during fermentation, and organic winemakers may also add permitted amounts to protect the wine. Organic does not mean sulphite-free, although the rules governing additions differ from those for conventional wine.
Is organic wine the same as natural wine?
No. Organic wine is governed by defined standards and can be independently certified. Natural wine is a less formally defined approach generally associated with minimal intervention in the cellar. Some natural wines are organic, but an organic wine is not necessarily natural.
Does organic wine taste different?
There is no single “organic” taste. Grape variety, climate, vineyard, winemaking and ageing have a much greater influence on flavour. Organic wines can be fresh and delicate, rich and powerful, traditional or unconventional, just like other wines.
