Natural Wine Buying Guide

What style of natural wine do you enjoy?

Start with the styles you already like rather than searching for a particular “natural” flavour. Natural wines can be crisp and mineral, rich and textured, light and juicy or structured and savoury. If you enjoy classic styles, there are beautifully precise natural wines to explore; if you prefer something more adventurous, skin contact, unusual grape varieties and unconventional winemaking can offer plenty to discover.

What does low-intervention mean?

Low-intervention winemaking generally means allowing the grapes and fermentation to do more of the work, with fewer additions and less manipulation in the cellar. Producers may use native yeasts, avoid fining or filtration and keep sulphur additions low, although practices vary considerably. The aim is not simply to do less, but to make thoughtful decisions that allow the character of the fruit and vineyard to come through.

Natural doesn't have to mean funky

Natural wine is sometimes associated with cloudy, fizzy or unusual-tasting bottles, but that represents only part of the category. Many natural wines are clean, precise and classically styled. Others deliberately explore more unconventional flavours and textures. Neither approach is inherently better — what matters is good farming, careful winemaking and, ultimately, whether the wine is delicious.

What is natural wine?

Is natural wine the same as organic wine?

Does natural wine contain sulphites?

Yes, it can. Sulphites occur naturally during fermentation, so even a wine with no added sulphur can contain them. Some natural winemakers add little or no additional sulphur, while others use small amounts when they believe it helps protect the wine.

Is natural wine always cloudy or funky?

No. Natural wines can be clear, precise and classically styled just as they can be cloudy, lively or unconventional. Natural wine describes an approach to growing grapes and making wine rather than one particular flavour or appearance.
