Italy produces an extraordinary range of red wines, shaped by hundreds of local grape varieties and strongly regional winemaking traditions. Some styles are light, fresh and savoury, while others are powerful, structured and capable of ageing for many years. Understanding the grape, region and producer is often more useful than relying on a familiar name alone.
What style of Italian red wine do you enjoy?
If you enjoy bright, savoury reds with freshness and acidity, look towards Sangiovese-based wines such as Chianti and other Tuscan styles. Nebbiolo from Piedmont can be more aromatic and structured, with red fruit, floral notes and firm tannins. For something richer, Amarone and other wines from warmer regions can offer deeper fruit, greater concentration and a fuller texture.
Choosing Italian red wine for food
Italian red wines are particularly well suited to food because many combine fresh acidity with savoury fruit and moderate to firm tannins. Sangiovese works beautifully with tomato-based dishes, roast meats and hard cheeses, while Nebbiolo is excellent with richer dishes, mushrooms and slow-cooked meats. Fuller-bodied southern Italian reds and Amarone can stand up well to hearty, deeply flavoured food.
Explore beyond Tuscany and Piedmont
Tuscany and Piedmont are home to some of Italy's most famous red wines, but there is much more to discover. Veneto offers everything from fresh Valpolicella to powerful Amarone, while Sicily, Puglia, Campania and other regions produce distinctive reds from local grape varieties. Exploring beyond the best-known regions is one of the most rewarding ways to understand the diversity of Italian wine.
Italian Red Wine FAQs
What are the main Italian red wine grapes?
Italy has hundreds of native grape varieties, but some of the most important red grapes include Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Corvina, Montepulciano, Aglianico and Nero d'Avola. International varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also widely grown, particularly in parts of Tuscany and northern Italy.
What is the difference between Chianti, Barolo and Amarone?
Chianti is a Tuscan wine based mainly on Sangiovese and is typically fresh, savoury and food-friendly. Barolo comes from Piedmont and is made from Nebbiolo, producing aromatic, structured wines with firm tannins and strong ageing potential. Amarone comes from Veneto and is made from partially dried grapes, resulting in a richer, more concentrated and powerful style.
What food goes with Italian red wine?
The best pairing depends on the style of wine. Sangiovese-based reds work particularly well with tomato-based dishes, pasta, roast meats and hard cheeses. Nebbiolo is excellent with mushrooms, game and slow-cooked meat, while richer reds such as Amarone suit hearty dishes, mature cheeses and deeply flavoured food.
Do Italian red wines need ageing?
Not necessarily. Many Italian reds are made to be enjoyed young, particularly fresh and fruit-driven styles. More structured wines such as Barolo, Brunello and some Amarone can develop considerably with bottle age, becoming softer and more complex over time. Ageing potential depends on the producer, region, vintage and individual wine.
