The Heart Cut #10 White Peak Wire Works

Punchy, jammy, and a little bit smoky, this is a smashing spirit to put the Peak District on the world whisky map. A fifth of the barley used in this dram is peated, lending a tobacco note that is balanced by plums, cola, bacon and thick strawberry jelly flavours, thanks to ageing in tawny port casks. There’s a lot going on in this whisky, yet it remains perfectly balanced, and eminently drinkable.

Method Magic White Peak distillery only started releasing whisky in 2022, but they’ve certainly honoured the heritage of their Derwent Valley location, the birthplace of the manufacturing revolution, in making a product of exceptional quality. Based in an old wire works factory, they’ve sourced yeast with their local Thornbridge brewery, adding to a blend of 80/20 unpeated/peated barley. The spirit has been fully matured in tawny port casks, before bottling at a whopping 55%. Only 527 bottles made. 🥃
