Method Magic It is aged for Laurent Merlin. Their vineyards cling to the dramatic, vertiginous hillsides of Cote-Rotie, where ancient Syrah vines dig deep into fractured granite, soaking up sun by day and cool alpine air by night. Everything here is worked by hand; it must be as these slopes are too wild for machines, and that struggle shows up in the intensity and elegance of the wines. The domaine was founded by François Merlin, a former apprentice of Rhône legend René Rostaing, who carved out his own path in the late 1980s with a fiercely independent, low-intervention philosophy. Today, François works alongside his son Laurent Merlin, bringing a new generation’s precision while keeping the soul intact. Together, they craft Côte-Rôtie that is dark, smoky, floral, and irresistibly refined—wines that feel both raw and polished, capturing the drama of the hillside and the quiet confidence of one of the Rhône’s coolest family estates.
